Takeaways from Milton's Citizen Engagement Survey 2022

March 20, 2023

In the fall of 2022, Forum Research Inc. contacted random Milton residents with a telephone sample called the Citizen Engagement Survey

The survey aimed to collect voluntary, confidential, and anonymous opinions to ensure that the town’s objectives and goals were adequately in line with the priorities and needs of its residents.

This sample was the first of its kind for Milton, and it’s important because the results provide valuable insights into developing the type of community Milton residents want to live, work, and play in. They also help Milton’s City Council and Administration decide where to allocate funds for new and existing programs, services, initiatives, and capital projects.

Top of Mind Issues

Three major issues were top of mind for Milton residents:

  • Transportation: Roads, traffic, public transit
  • Development and infrastructure: Rapid growth, population, maintaining infrastructure
  • Economic items: Affordable housing

What does this mean for the Milton housing market? First, transportation, specifically public transit, is vital for
Milton’s growing communities. This essential service creates jobs, provides easy mobility, and takes cars off the street, therefore, reducing pollution. Reducing traffic congestion also fosters economic growth in the economy.

When it comes to
real estate in Milton, Ontario, homes close to public transit show increased property values and are more resilient to economic downturns.

The short-term rental market shows the same results. Airbnb and VRBO properties have a higher return when they’re close to public transportation and offer easy access to downtown amenities. As a result, properties situated close to downtown with good accessibility to public transit should continue seeing growth in real estate prices.
